the “stuff” that matters

I am feeling surrounded by too much stuff these days. Lots of it belongs to my kids, but most of it is mine.  I am a sentimental pack rat (certainly a dangerous combination) who lives in a big house (danger! danger!) and I am collecting too many treasures (and art supplies and “might-need-someday” things and, and….).  In recent years I have taken some half-hearted stabs at purging (letting go is hard for me on so many levels).  Plenty of boxes have gone out the door to the local thrift shops, but oh I love finding new treasures at those very same thrift shops (and apparently the in-flow is greater than the out-flow).  Then there are the treasures I am clinging to as my children grow – the art, the momentos, favourite baby clothes etc —- oh, those first walking shoes!

I am looking around me and feeling it might be time to do another purge, but more importantly, perhaps a shift in perspective will assist me the most.  I came across this today and am inspired by this important reminder of what is important!

Thank you to Red Autumn for offering this illustration to all of us for free.  Hope it inspires you too.  I am off to DO some fun art with my kids (wish me luck that I might let go of the final product).

  1. it is tough to decide what matters when there is so much around us…sweet and tough…perspective shifts easily depending on what is happening. I applaud your efforts and think that more time to pare down (thoughts, stuff, etc) is a very good thing to create more of. I will join you in that quest!

  2. Even though armed with the knowledge that when you finally get rid of something , the very next day you’ll need it ! Be brave Christy !
… Now where did I put that 4 foot length of plastic drain pipe ? It’ll be perfect for … DOH !!! “)

    • Ha ha! I love that you totally get it, Rob! And I love how both you and Mel have both touched on how this really is an epic “quest” and that I need to be “brave” to succeed!

    • You are most welcome Amber! I am definitely going to print this and hang it where I can see it daily!
Thanks for stopping by to say hi!
