multiplying love

This morning I finished up some sweet little commissions full of BIG love!  The woman who ordered the two “amour” hearts had ordered from me before, having found me through a friend who had my art on her walls.  I had only conversed with this repeat customer (can I say “fan”?) over the email in the past.  This week I spoke with her on the phone for the first time and her love for my art came shining through the conversation!  When I asked if the paintings were special gifts, she replied that they were and added that she wished she could keep one.  In that moment, I knew I had to paint an extra one for her! I sneakily asked “Do you love these colours too?” and she replied that she did, she really loved turquoise!  Et voila, the love she ordered up multiplied — I will be including a little extra love just for her with her special order today.  Because hey, anyone that loves aqua as much as me deserves a turquoise heart!!!  Wouldn’t you agree?

How are you spreading your love this week?

I need to put more energy into relaxing…

painting I made on a summer day

Today was a rough day, today I was overwhelmed with the house chores, the to-do lists, the weeds in the garden, the birthday gifts that needed to be made and mailed, the overdue library books and late home schooling reports, the whining kids and my exhausted state.  I am ashamed to say that I lost my temper (several times) and yelled at my kids.  After apologies, snuggles and story time together, I was still pretty frazzled.  When hubby came home I escaped for a very long walk and that helped.  After our late lunch I realized my mood was still too delicate to tackle the endless tasks awaiting me after 3 very busy weeks of work and year-end activities for the kids.  And so, I escaped to my room for a                                                                        N A P !                                                                 Not sure when I last did that, but after over an hour and a half I finally woke up, this time with a relative sense of calm and a feeling that I could make it through the day (mind you, it was nearly dinner, so that shouldn’t really be so daunting in any case).

What was the biggest lesson in this hard day?  I think this painting of mine has captured it —  I need to put more energy into relaxing!  It might be time to move this piece out of the guest room and into a room that I spend more time in…

Perhaps I should move it to an outdoor “room”.  I definitely have not been putting enough energy into sipping tea on the new deck….I will have to try a little harder!

How are you making efforts to relax these days?

MUSIC Group Art Show…..the symphony approaches!

I have been very busy painting for an upcoming group art show at a little gallery and art shop in Nanaimo.  Why not stop by Artzi Stuff in the Old Quarter this Saturday night to meet me and some of the other artists and see how we have interpreted the MUSICALLY INCLINED theme?   Here’s a look at the four mixed-media paintings I have created for the show.

And a peek at the large painting that started them all…..I got the song “What a Wonderful World” into my head and was humming and singing this tune for weeks in the studio…..me thinks that is why I saw ‘em bloom (the flowers in my paintings, just like the roses in the song).

A little bit of vintage sheet music + a tune in my head + heaps of colourful paint = music for your eyes!  Hope you can join us for the fun on opening night…from 7:30 – 9:30 pm.  If you cannot make it, drop by any time in the next month to see the art….or at least the creations that are still for sale!

more pink blooming in the studio!

A little something in progress for a MUSIC themed art show coming up at a local art shop.  There are several layers of paint over the vintage sheet music I started with, the flower is inspired by the “I see ‘em bloom” line in “What a Wonderful World” — the classic that I have been singing while I work on the paintings for this show.  What do you think so far?

creative blooming!

The birds are singing, the frogs are chirping, the days are getting longer and my creative self is waking up! I think perhaps these early spring days might carry a bit of magic for me.  I have heard that we all have a certain time of day and time of year that we are most inspired, I wonder if this might be my seasonal highlight?  I think that I often I feel this way after the long dreary winter starts to lift.  I think my response in the past has been to save up all my ideas and look forward to the summer when I have time off work and can more easily put the ideas into action.

I am beginning to realize this plan to wait has some serious flaws – the biggest being my desire to be outdoors (beach!!) with my kids and the visiting that fills up the summer days. So this time I am leaping into the creative FLOW that is filling me up — turning the bedside table on every 5 minutes to jot another painting idea in my sketchbook (sleep can come later!), doodling after dinner with my tea and my girls, throwing paint at canvases with so many ideas and no idea what will come next (JOY!), toting a basket full of watercolour pencils and related supplies on our beach trips “just in case”.  I am cleaning corners in my studio (short 15 minutes bursts, more fun, less daunting) and planning creating projects with friends.  I am absolutely LIT UP with inspiration and feel SO ALIVE!

Here’s a peek at some of the paintings blooming in my studio right now….what is inspiring you to blossom at this magical time of year?

P.S. I just checked on our flowering red currant – her new buds are just starting to colour.  Could this be where the pink layers came from during last night’s painting hit?
